The first example of association crop

An example is the cultivation of onions near carrots, for the first repels the carrot fly, a pest that causes significant damage to the plant. Also, some associations also enhance flavor and growth.

You know what our first conclusion about the compatibility of plants?

The simultaneous cultivation of two compatible plants produces benefits over separate cultivation, and the use of light, water, and/or nutrients is better.

There are other plants that couples are indifferent to each other and cause neither harm nor benefit. Still, there are also some negative associations incompatible plants whose combination can increase competition for resources and the incidence of pests.

Listen up! Let’s give some advice to the association of crops

  • Crops with different growth rates: if we plant fast-growing (eg, lettuce) in free space there until the crop grows slower (col) took advantage of the space and hardly any competition between them.
  • Plants of the same family are often incompatible:  We must avoid cultivating together. Examples: cucurbits (watermelon, melon, squash, zucchini, cucumber …), legumes (beans, beans, peas, lentils …) or solanaceous (eggplant, tomato, pepper, potato …).
  • Plantar legumes to incorporate nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil after a voracious and demanding plant, which depletes the ground, such as carrot, celery, corn, cucurbits or brassicas (cabbage, cabbage, turnip …).
  • I am associating growing fruits and vegetables with floral and aromatic plants, which pests away or attract beneficial insects that favor biological control. The calendula, for example, attracts natural enemies of the aphid and other like sage, rosemary, or thyme away the flies carrot and cabbage, ants, and aphids.
